Description

VAE RDP (Redispersible Polymer Powder) – Description

VAE RDP stands for Vinyl Acetate–Ethylene Redispersible Polymer Powder. It is a free-flowing, spray-dried polymer powder produced from a VAE (Vinyl Acetate–Ethylene) emulsion. When mixed with water, it can redisperse to form a stable polymer emulsion again, restoring properties similar to the original latex.

VAE RDP is widely used as a performance-enhancing additive in dry-mix construction materials.

1. Chemical Composition

  • Base polymer: Vinyl Acetate–Ethylene copolymer

  • Production process: Emulsion polymerization → spray drying

  • Protective colloid: Usually polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)

  • Additives: Anti-caking agents (e.g., silica), defoamers (depending on grade)

2. Key Characteristics

  • White, free-flowing powder

  • Redispersible in cold water

  • Forms flexible polymer film after drying

  • Improves adhesion, cohesion, and flexibility

  • Good compatibility with cement, gypsum, lime

3. Main Functions in Mortar Systems

When added to cement or gypsum-based systems, VAE RDP provides:

✔ Adhesion Enhancement

Improves bonding to substrates like:

  • Concrete

  • Brick

  • AAC blocks

  • Tile surfaces

✔ Flexibility & Crack Resistance

  • Reduces brittleness of cement mortar

  • Improves deformation ability

  • Enhances resistance to shrinkage cracks

✔ Water Retention Improvement

  • Reduces water absorption into substrate

  • Improves workability

  • Extends open time

✔ Impact & Abrasion Resistance

  • Enhances mechanical strength

  • Improves durability

✔ Cohesion & Workability

  • Makes mortar smoother

  • Reduces segregation and bleeding

4. Typical Applications

VAE RDP is widely used in:

  • Tile adhesives (C1, C2 grade)

  • Tile grouts

  • External wall insulation systems (EIFS/ETICS)

  • Skim coat / wall putty

  • Self-leveling compounds

  • Repair mortar

  • Waterproof mortar

  • Plaster and gypsum-based products

5. Typical Technical Properties (General Range)

Property Typical Value
Appearance White powder
Solid content ≥ 98%
Bulk density 400–600 kg/m³
Ash content 8–15%
MFFT 0°C to 15°C (depends on grade)
Glass transition temp (Tg) -5°C to +15°C

Note: Values vary by manufacturer and grade.

6. Advantages of VAE-Based RDP

Compared with other polymer types:

  • Good cost-performance balance

  • Moderate flexibility

  • Good adhesion to cementitious substrates

  • Suitable for general construction applications

7. Storage & Handling

  • Store in dry, cool environment

  • Avoid moisture exposure

  • Shelf life typically 6–12 months

  • Protect from high humidity

VAE Redispersible Polymer Powder is a key functional additive in modern dry-mix mortar systems. It improves adhesion, flexibility, workability, and durability by forming a polymer film within the cement matrix after hydration and drying.
